Mekorot is a Hebrew typeface in the Rashi style, the semi-cursive script traditionally used to set rabbinical commentary alongside the square-letter main text. The name means sources; the project began as part of an effort to typeset a free Hebrew Talmud preserving the traditional page layout, Tzurat HaDaf.
The design descends from Dr. Alan Hoenig’s Makor, by way of a SourceForge revival, and was reengineered and redrawn in 2023 for inclusion in the Google Fonts catalog. The Latin companion is a fork of Spectral; an Arabic Naskh is included for mixed Semitic-script settings. Sources and build system are open on GitHub.

Hebrew with full niqqud, including pointed liturgical and rabbinic text; Arabic in the included Naskh; and a broad European Latin (a fork of Spectral) covering English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Romanian, Turkish, the Scandinavian and Baltic languages, and more.
Mekorot is free and open source under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 — use it, ship it, modify it. Sources are UFO; builds are reproducible with the repo’s Makefile and gftools. A Google Fonts release is in preparation.
